Mews began in Prague in 2012 with a problem that looked narrow but turned out to be global: hotel property-management systems were often built around internal processes rather than the guest experience. Founder Richard Valtr had worked in hotels and wanted software that was easier for staff to use and more adaptable to modern operations.

He was soon joined by Matthijs Welle, another former hotelier who became chief executive. That operator background shaped the company's early positioning around hospitality workflows rather than generic enterprise software.

The product expanded beyond the original PMS

As Mews grew, the product broadened from a property-management system into a wider hospitality platform covering operations, payments, guest journeys and integrations. That expansion matters because hotel software markets reward vendors that can sit at the centre of a property's technology stack.

The commercial challenge is integration depth: hotels depend on booking channels, payment providers, revenue systems and specialist tools, so a central platform has to connect rather than simply replace everything around it.

Prague was the origin, not the limit

Mews describes itself as born in Prague but now operates internationally, with a large distributed workforce and customers across many countries. That makes it representative of a recurring Czech startup pattern: engineering and founding roots in Czechia, followed by a commercial footprint that becomes increasingly international.

For Czech Business Review, that distinction matters. A company can remain part of the Czech technology story even when its revenue, ownership and executive footprint become global.

Why Mews matters to the Czech SaaS ecosystem

Mews demonstrates that Czech-founded software can scale in a vertical market rather than competing only in horizontal developer tools or cybersecurity. Hospitality technology is fragmented, operationally complex and global, which rewards domain knowledge as much as raw software capability.

Its trajectory also connects to CBR's wider research on Czech SaaS companies, founders and the Prague startup ecosystem.
