Brno's Tech Ecosystem: Why Czechia's Second City Matters for Startups

Brno's technology economy is easy to underestimate if Czech startups are viewed only through Prague. The South Moravian capital has a dense mix of universities, research institutes, global technology employers and locally founded companies, giving it a distinctive engineering-led ecosystem.

The city's advantage is specialisation. Software and cybersecurity sit alongside electron microscopy, scientific instruments, semiconductors and other technical fields where deep engineering skills matter as much as consumer-market scale.

Universities are part of the company pipeline

Masaryk University and Brno University of Technology supply a large technical graduate base, while research institutions connect the city to science-intensive commercial activity. That helps companies recruit locally and creates opportunities for researchers and engineers to move into startups.

The relationship is not automatic. Strong research becomes an economic advantage only when talent, intellectual property, founders and capital can move effectively between institutions and companies.

JIC gives Brno an unusually established support layer

The South Moravian Innovation Centre, JIC, has supported technology companies and entrepreneurs in the region for years. Its role gives Brno a more institutionalised startup support system than its size might suggest.
