Cities are becoming technology buyers in their own right. Transport management, energy systems, public data, sensors, digital services and resilient infrastructure increasingly require the same procurement and integration skills found in large industrial technology projects.
CzechInvest's preview of URBIS 2026, opening in Brno on 2 June, framed the event around the intersection of cities, innovation and business. That is a more useful lens than treating smart-city technology as a collection of demonstrations.
A city can be a reference customer
For a Czech startup or engineering company, a domestic municipal deployment can provide something venture funding cannot: evidence that the technology works in a complex public environment. That reference can be valuable when selling into other European cities.
The challenge is procurement. Municipal sales cycles are slow, systems need to interoperate with legacy infrastructure, and buyers must balance innovation with continuity and public accountability.
Brno is a logical venue
Brno already combines universities, engineering, cybersecurity and a growing advanced-technology ecosystem. Urban technology adds another application layer for those capabilities, particularly in mobility and data-driven infrastructure.
The strongest projects are likely to be those that solve a measurable operational problem rather than simply adding a digital interface. Travel time, energy use, maintenance cost, safety and service accessibility give cities concrete outcomes to evaluate.
Smart city should mean exportable infrastructure
The Czech opportunity is not to brand every municipal app as smart-city innovation. It is to use demanding local deployments to build products that can travel.
If URBIS helps connect municipalities with credible Czech suppliers and creates repeatable procurement models, its economic value extends beyond the event itself. Cities become testbeds, companies gain references and the technology cluster gains another path from engineering to market.
