The most strategically important technologies are not always the largest markets. Cryptographic products used to protect sensitive government communications sit in a narrow category where trust, evaluation and national capability matter as much as conventional product features.
On 5 May, NÚKIB announced that Czechia once again had a national cryptographic product evaluated at EU level. The milestone deserves attention because it restores a specialised capability inside the country's security technology base.
Sovereign security depends on small technical layers
Governments cannot treat every component of secure communications as an interchangeable commodity. Encryption products used in sensitive environments need assurance over implementation, key handling, supply chains and operational controls.
That creates a market where national technical competence has strategic value even when commercial volumes are modest. It also provides skills and institutional knowledge that can spill into wider cybersecurity work.
The timing is important
European security policy is simultaneously dealing with NIS2 implementation, software supply-chain risk and the long-term transition toward quantum-resistant cryptography. Czechia is active in each of those conversations through NÚKIB and research partnerships.
An evaluated national encryption capability therefore fits a broader pattern rather than standing alone. Cybersecurity is becoming an industrial and sovereignty question as well as an IT-management function.
A niche worth treating as technology policy
Czech technology coverage often concentrates on venture-backed software, AI and advanced manufacturing. Secure communications should sit alongside them because it represents a form of high-assurance engineering with unusually demanding barriers to entry.
The next question is whether Czech research, government procurement and commercial cyber companies can turn that expertise into a deeper cluster around cryptography, quantum-safe communications and secure infrastructure.
